Search used to mean one thing: ten blue links on Google. Today your buyer might see an answer box, read a Google AI Overview, ask ChatGPT for a shortlist or hear a voice assistant read out one business name. Ranking still matters, but it's now one of five layers that decide whether you get found, quoted, recommended and chosen.
The short answer
Modern search visibility has five parts. SEO gets you ranked on Google. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) gets you quoted as the answer. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) gets you recommended by ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. AIO (AI Optimization) gets your website into Google's AI Overviews. SXO (Search Experience Optimization) turns those visits into leads and sales. Skip one and a competitor fills the gap.
1. SEO: still the foundation
Every AI system that summarizes the web still leans on pages that are fast, crawlable and clearly about something. Technical health, a clean site structure, pages mapped to real buyer searches and authority from trusted links remain the ground floor. If Google can't understand your site, no AI tool will either.
2. AEO: be the answer, not just a result
More searches now end without a click, because the answer is shown on the results page or read aloud. AEO means putting a short, direct answer at the top of each key page, then the depth. Add real FAQ sections built from the questions customers actually ask you, and schema markup (FAQ, HowTo, LocalBusiness, Product) so machines know exactly what each part of the page means.
3. GEO: get on the AI shortlist
When a buyer asks an assistant "who's the best HVAC company near me" or "which agency builds Shopify stores", the model recommends brands it sees mentioned consistently across trusted sources. GEO is about being in those sources: accurate business listings, reviews, industry directories, press mentions and original content worth citing. The same facts about your business, everywhere.
4. AIO: make your website readable by AI
AIO is the technical side. Can AI crawlers reach your pages? Is your business clearly defined as an entity, with consistent name, address, services and founder? Do you use Organization, Service and Article schema? Pages built this way are easier for Google's AI Overviews to pull from, and everything that helps AIO also helps classic SEO.
5. SXO: win the visit after the click
Traffic that bounces is money already spent. SXO checks that each page matches what the searcher wanted, loads fast on a phone, and makes the next step obvious. Search engines notice when people are satisfied, so better experience lifts rankings and conversions at the same time.
What hasn't changed
Being the primary source still wins. AI systems prefer original data, clear comparisons and real expertise over the tenth rewrite of someone else's article. Write from what you actually know about your customers, answer their questions plainly, and keep your business facts consistent across the web.
Where to start
Check three things this week: does your homepage say clearly who you serve and where; do your top service pages answer the main buyer question in the first two sentences; and is your Google Business Profile complete and consistent with your website. If you want the full picture across all five layers, we'll find the leak and send you a clear plan.
